The Development Office and Events & Conference Team work closely to produce a range of events for alumni and their guests throughout the year. These range from an annual garden party, academic symposiums, concerts, dinners in Cambridge and London, drinks receptions, and more.

We are very pleased to be able to outline our events calendar for the coming months. We are very much looking forward to seeing you, whether in person or online, in the very near future!

Talking Ed’s – Research and Methods

Prof. Shaz Ansari will speak on Rethinking Disruptive innovation: Theoretical controversies and practical relevance

In an era marked by rapid innovation and transformative changes, disruptive innovation stands as a critical lens through which we examine the evolving business landscape. It compels us to rethink management and research strategies amidst a world where conventional models are continually being challenged. For over two decades, this theory has ignited discussions and debates, focusing on its applicability, definitional clarity, predictive and prescriptive potential and the extent of its impact in guiding strategic decision-making. This ongoing discourse opens new avenues for understanding, inviting a broad audience in both academic and practical realms to explore the nuanced impact of disruptive innovation and its role in shaping future strategies and practices.

Shaz Ansari is a Professor of Strategy and Innovation at Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, Head of Strategy and International Business Group, Professorial Fellow of St Edmund’s College, Cambridge and served as Honorary Professor at UCL, UK. He holds a PhD from University of Cambridge. His research focuses on two key phenomena: social and environmental issues, and technology strategy and innovation management, including platform ecosystems. He has investigated topics such as climate change, human development, inequality, disability, work in extreme contexts, and palliative care drawing primarily on a framing and institutional lens but also on sensemaking, social movements, temporality, identity, power, and ethics.

Prof. Sergio Dellavalle will speak on Does Cosmopolitan Law Have a Future?

From its earliest introduction in 1795, the notion of cosmopolitan law has made a long way, to finally become an established reference point in the legal discourse. Nonetheless, the concept raises some relevant and, to a certain extent, also unsettling questions. Firstly, what is precisely meant by the notion of cosmopolitan law? Secondly, is it adequately legitimized by democratic processes? And, thirdly, is cosmopolitan law still a desirable and feasible goal in times in which the idea of the existence of universal values seems to be in mortal danger?

Sergio Dellavalle is Professor of Public Law and State Theory at The University of Turin (Italy), Department of Law. He has extensively published in the fields of political and legal philosophy, as well as of international and constitutional law theory. Amongst his most recent publications: Paradigms of Social Order (Palgrave Macmillan 2021). Professor Dellavalle is presently writing a book with the title A Republic of Fellow Sufferers: How to Grant Rights to Nature, in which he explores the different strategies that have been developed to justify the attribution of rights to non-human natural entities.

Tuesday 30th April, 6:00-7:00pm, Garden Room (Tea, coffee and snacks from 5:30pm)

Registration will close at 12pm on 25th April.

St Edmund’s College Garden Party 2024

The Master is delighted to invite Alumni back to the College for the Annual St Edmund’s Garden Party, to be held in College on Sunday 16 June from 2 – 4pm.

Do you remember the beauty and tranquility of St Edmund’s in the Summer?  ….. strolling through the dappled shade of the orchard, throwing down a picnic blanket and relaxing with friends in the sunshine? Why not recreate and share the experience with family and friends, old and new.

With a typically ‘British’ selection of summer refreshments on offer, to include sandwiches, strawberries & cream and pimms & lemonade, as well as entertainment in the form of live music, lawn games, fairground side stalls and a ride for the children, this laidback annual event strikes the perfect balance between relaxation and revelry.

Alumni can purchase tickets for themselves and up to 3 guests (to include their spouse/partner) at a subsidised price of £13.00 each, courtesy of the Alumni Society.  There is no charge for children aged 15 and under, however we will need to know how many children (up to four per booking) will be accompanying you for catering purposes.

Whilst there is no strict dress code for this event, a standard of dress suitable for this type of event is desired.  We really hope that you will be able to join us.
